perform or else...

Assuming that we live in a performative society, what constitutes a worthwhile performance?

Tuesday 6 November 2007

you're an actor

One day you yourself will be the performer. But will you be aware of your title once you hold it? Those of us who have been beaten into submission and surrendered our soul to the myspace/facebook cult have encroached already upon their ‘obligatory’ five minutes of fame, and in turn have edged steadily closer to the role of stalker. By divulging endless torrents of personal niceties on your profile have you too become a performer? Unless the reader has an incredibly unhealthy obsession are they sincerely going to be concerned with the fact that you quite like the taste of a fag on a mans lips? Or that after returning to your fourth year at a strict catholic school, in which you were taught by stern unforgiving nuns, you may have become a bit of a rebel…
Anyway, by releasing a personal account of your likes, dislikes, show size etc you have created a miniature yet still significant performance for all to enjoy (you hope). In some instances this can be seen as involuntary, yet in others seemingly more calculated, as to some degree you’re free to develop and manufacture an entirely new you, resolve flaws and highly edit those blemishes.

performance

Performance has continually implied and been associated to a sense of accomplishment. An action of a spectacular nature in which it capably fulfils its intended purpose. However, our recent generation of performers have taken this definition and contorted its importance and consequence, leaving their audience outraged, perplexed, shaken or, perhaps, sympathetic. The 21 century’s perception of performance still encompasses a purpose and to some extent an accomplishment, yet in some instances it may be a demanding proposition of its audience to fully comprehend what that exactly is.
Today, what constitutes as a performance can have an entirely different implications.
The growth of our web 2.0 family suggests at some point you yourself will be the performer, whether you know it now or not. This is something I hope to touch upon at a later date.

your mum

Rule of thumb...if she uses the word...it's likely it's not.

well then

Better start on this "cool" notion.
After scouring the web for quite a while I realised that I really should start with what I perceive to be "cool".
To me my blog profile is now...getting there..minimalism is cool..but in a sense I'm contradicting myself because I have a soft spot for really busy photography. I'll find some examples in a bit.

it begins

Firstly for those of you with weak sight of eyes...quickly scout for your contacts, my font is pretty damn small.

Go has been given. Fingers have been crossed. All of them.
Plus this is going in because it strobes me a lil bit....
